Chapter 10

How can I tell, you're who you say you are. At least, you think you are," Jonathan said.

Jim stood next to a large window and looked out. He guessed he was at least forty stories up, and even so, the tops of nearby buildings vanished far above, into what seemed to be a permanent mist.

Off to his left, the antique structure of the Golden Gate Bridge, now a ramshackle collection of condominiums, glowed in the Jim light. So he was in San Francisco. The idea that at least he knew where he was, if not much else, gave him some comfort.

"Huh...? What does that mean? Of course I'm who I am. Who else would I be?"

Jonathan came up behind him. He moved as quietly as a ghost. When he spoke again, his nearness startled Jim, made him jump. Of course everything about Jonathan made him jumpy.

"Oh, Jimmy, how naive you are. You could be anybody. You could believe you're anybody. The human mind is a malleable thing.." Just like the human DNA."

This made so little sense that Jim turned and stared at him. "What are you talking about?"

Jonathan shrugged. "Your DNA, for instance, is very.." Interesting."

"I don't give a damn about that. What happened to Cat? What's going on, Jonathan?"

"Well, now, that's a trick question, isn't it? We had you under for three days, my boy. You're a regular treasure trove."

"Jonathan.."

"Oh, all right. Miss Cat is... Missing, as I said. But no presumed dead, if that sets your mind at rest."

Jim let out a long, relieved sigh. It had been in the back mind, that somehow she was gone, and worse, that it fault. Everything seemed to be his fault, why not this, too?

'Tell me... "He said, excited." Where is she? "' :" Well now, that we don't know. Exactly. But first, young I think we need to have a long talk. I mean, aren't you You should be, you know."

Jonathan wandered away. The room was furnished with a couple of sofas a table, chairs, some cheap holoprints. It might been an inexpensive hotel room. It had that faceless feeling to it. Finally, Jonathan perched on one of the sofa "Doesn't it strike you odd, Jim, that so many people should concerned about you? So... Interested in you?"

Jim turned back to the window. Jonathan's quiet, insistent ing made him even more uneasy. "Of course," he said finally. Not an idiot. My dad told me..."

"Not enough, it appears. You dad was an interesting man He had a history. What's even more interesting is that, fact we turned your deep memory over like an unmade bed, we know everything about Carl Endicott that you do, we still trace that history. Old Carl, he was a real mystery man." The thought seemed to make Jonathan happy. "You could have just asked me."

"Oh, we did, Jimbo. Jimmy, we did. Doesn't your head ache?"

"As a matter of fact, it does."

"It'll pass. Ignore it. Anyway, time for a history lesson. Mystery lesson, big Jim." Jonathan slid off his perch.
